BAM in the community

BAM! Started as a fusion of non-contact boxing and mindfulness which was awarded the national Innovations in Mindfulness Award 2022 and is delivered in the elite sports world and to disadvantaged communities.  

It’s evolved to use non contact boxing and a range of physical exercise combined with simple, powerful meditation practices to improve mental health. BAM brings both physical and mental training together. 

BAM! can be implemented in any service and has already been effectively delivered and tested in a wide range of contexts including with disadvantaged young people, children with learning disabilities, LGBTQ+communities, adults in recovery from addiction and young carers.

BAM! Practitioner Training Programme PTP

A powerful training programme which equips you with the skills and confidence to deliver BAM! within your own service so you can pass BAM onto the people you work with:  The programme involves 3 days in- person training, plus a short online review session.

You will become a registered BAM! practitioner with the ability to:

Deliver full BAM! sessions

Deliver full 30-60 minute BAM! sessions to your service users  

Deliver mini BAM! practices

Deliver mini 12 minutes BAM! practices as part of your own service activities

Deliver short meditation practices

Deliver (3, 6, and 12 mins) meditation practice from the elite sports world to the people you work with

Who is it for?

BAM! can be used in a broad range of contexts to improve wellbeing. BAM! PTP will be especially useful for mental health practitioners, youth workers, teachers, social workers, keyworkers, psychotherapists and counsellors, mindfulness instructors.

No prior knowledge of mindfulness is required

Just an openness to practising mindfulness yourself.  You’ll be expected to use mindfulness for 10 minutes or more a day throughout the training period.

You’ll be given preparation materials and encouraged to establish your own meditation practice which supports the BAM! training. 

The first Training Day Provides theory and key practice elements of a BAM! session, the second focuses on practising delivery and running BAM! safely. Throughout you’ll continue to learn and develop your own mindfulness practice using BAM! home workout materials, aided by an online group review session. The training concludes with a practising delivery and preparing you to use BAM! within your own service. 

PHASE 1: FOUNDATION

Online Kick-off session

Launch your journey with an online introduction to the programme, meet your cohort, establish your personal BAM practice, and get set up with essential resources.

Daily home practice

12 minutes of mindfulness practice per day, 5 days per week, using comprehensive home workout materials and guided meditations designed specifically for newcomers without any prior experiences.

Weekly Practice drop-in sessions

Optional online sessions every Wednesday throughout the training period to support your developing practice, troubleshoot challenges, and build community.

Workbook exercises

Complete key reflection exercises to deepen your understanding and prepare for in-person training.

PHASE 2: TRAINING

Day 1: Setting the Foundations

Full-day immersive session introducing core theory, physical elements of body-mind practice, and beginning to work with the S.P.A Framework that helps you learn a safe, clear way to understand meditation, and BAM practices for yourself and vulnerable client groups.

Day 2: Advanced Practice & Teaching Skills

Full-day in-person session focused on practising delivery, developing your teaching voice, and refining your sport-specific action plans of where you can deliver BAM within your services.

Day 3: final Certification

Full-day session where you demonstrate your capability to deliver body-mind training in your context and receive your certification. Developing your understanding of safe delivery of BAM including Safeguarding, managing groups & trauma-sensitive approach to delivery.

Ongoing Support

Readiness as a practitioner: Create a video of you delivering a mini BAM! Session Shared with MPP in your own work context Shared with MPP in your own work context within 2 weeks

Weekly Practice drop in sessions

Continue your weekly online practice sessions to maintain momentum and deepen your understanding once you have completed your training. Also an opportunity to talk about your delivery and keep learning as you go.

Commitment Requirements

meet the Faculty

Luke Doherty

A former England U-18s rugby player, Luke left elite sports to train in mindfulness and study how contemplative practices support high performance and mental wellbeing. He now designs and delivers bespoke mindfulness programmes for elite athletes, leaders, teams, and grassroots communities.Luke also works with leadership teams, specifically using mindfulness to resolve conflicts and uncover new opportunities. His education and training include a degree in Law and a postgraduate diploma in Law & Community Leadership.

EMMANUEL ADDO

Emmanuel MPP’s lead boxing coach for both community and corporate programmes. He is a trained youth worker and safeguarding lead with extensive experience managing youth services across East London.Emmanuel is an avid boxer and has been involved in boxing projects to teach young people defensive skills and engage them in discussions on safety and security, leadership and community cohesion.

Miia Chambers

A former international tennis player, Miia has since worked in the fields of executive coaching and sports performance coaching.Miia is a mindfulness expert who has led the development of therapeutic models proven through academic research to improve psychological wellbeing and performance.Miia is also an experienced Supervisor, Chair, Trustee, and a specialist Director for the charity Mind.

Matthew Daniel

Matthew is a trained psychotherapist and the clinical supervisor for BAM! training. He supports delivery and continually updates the programme, incorporating client and participant feedback and providing clinical oversight.

Valerian Spicer

Valerian co-delivers BAM training. She didn’t enter a boxing gym until age 30, initially to keep fit, but went on to dedicate eight years to the sport, competing in 64 bouts, defeating three Olympians, and becoming a world-ranked international boxer.
